When to Stop
Learning when a painting is finished.
It’s hard to decide when a painting is finished. As I learn more about my style, I often find myself getting ‘fussy’ about certain parts of a piece, to then realize I should have stopped hours before. This past week, I decided to STOP very early in the process, and I am so happy with the result!
What I ended up with was a moody abstracted farm scene which seems to capture everything I was looking to say without the fuss. I am quite happy with the this piece! Going to try to use this technique on future works and see where it leads me.
A note to my future self…
Goal setter? YES.
New Year’s Resolution Maker? No.
Goal Setter? Yes.
New Year’s Resolution Maker? No.
But, I went ahead and took part in Emma Carlise’s ‘A Note to my Future Self’ exercise. Tailored to creatives, and full of fun questions, I built a list (with little sketches) as I followed along with Emma’s tradition. Write yourself a note and tuck it away with the Christmas Decorations.
With a few days off over the holidays and a fall season I’d like to forget, I’ll leave this with a few images of sketches I did over the holidays… Happy New Year!
