I didn’t photograph very many sketches last year. It was a year of flux and change with a new job, kids taking on different directions and a whole lot of resetting.

It was one of those March days where we thought the flowers might start surfacing through the mud, but instead, it snowed. Acrylic Gouache on an Etchr Sketchbook
An afternoon at my Mom's apartment in Toronto. The view from her balcony. This mish-mash includes acrylic gouache, posca, neocolor 2's, and maybe some derwent inktense. Etchr sketchbook
Out at the park. This soccer field park used to host a very busy horse show. Alas, it's now reserved for playing fetch with your dog, and soccer games in Collingwood - Etchr Sketchbook and dried gouache.
Equine Living Colour Horses never want to stand still. This sketch is comprised of layering various poses my horse makes while trying to photograph him. Done on Vellum Bristol Paper (11x14) with acrylic & neocolor 1.
Rich texture comes with patience. The patience to wait for a layer to dry before moving on to the next.
Ghost Ponies is another work where I practice the attention to negative spaces and how they flow throughout the work.
I desperately wanted to go to the Beastie Boys concert when I was a kid. It would have been grand. Instead, I sing Brass Monkeys and draw them.
Drawing Class fun! Working on tone, we sketched from a variety of images in a short time. I incorporated them all into one scene. Loving this one, might paint it later.
Trying to be neat. I wish the water was choppy.
Rogue Kids on Horseback Working on developing my awareness and understanding of negative spaces, I used a photograph of my kids riding as inspiration for this vibrant acrylic sketch on vellum bristol paper (11x14). Funny enough, they both knew it was them, and which horse they were riding even though the image was taken years ago and sat dormant in my photo files.
Working on various textures and composition, this mix of insanity pushed me to keep going, and keep trying to capture the scene, and include the curiosity of the donkey into the viewer.
Working on shadows, I tried to capture movement in this lazy cat as he lay caught up in string on the table.
The Whole Pig. Though the cringe of thinking about walking your pig to market comes years after the song about your toes, I included a continuous line to show the flow of life and the ecosystem we live in.
The beginnings of life jacket girl, or so I call her. I quickly sketched these two women looking out onto Georgian Bay and revisited the sketchbook drawing on a piece of loose 14x17 bristol paper. As I worked through the break wall, I noticed some of the shapes created a girl wearing a life jacket. I have since started working on a larger piece of her which I hope to finish soon.
Developing a stronger style of showing my cat's personality in this 11x14 gouache painting. I just love that right leg action with claws out and the smile is mischievous, just like my cat.
The gardens at the Russian Palace. I don't know if it's because of the news, but I had a dream about gardens outside a gorgeous Russian palace. So, I woke up and created this piece 11x14 Mixed Media
This one is a whole mish mash of different days. I started this on site at the farm, and moved it into my studio to complete the foreground. I love how primitive it turned out. Like, what is even going on here? I don't know, but I love it.
Trying floral arrangements on horses? I just love this horse's eyes. Especially the right eye, but this painting is one of my favourites this month as I continue putting pieces together for a large canvas piece. 11x14 Gouache.
Flowers & a Cow Bell. While doing some studies to determine the look of the larger piece I'm working on, I tried one where the cow bell shows. I love the colour and shading I achieved on it! 11x14 Mixed Media
My first sketch of the floral cows. I love how pronounced her muzzle is! I didn't finish this one, but I loved it at this stage, so I stopped!
Morning coffee and a whole lot going on in the garden brought together this mix of a piece! I love all the different things you can see when you start exploring the photo. It also shows how my dog ultimately doesn't care if anything touches him when he's sleeping. I've never had a dog like that before. So trusting. 14x17 Mixed Media
